Art & Design

At Booker Avenue Junior School, we believe that art stimulates creativity, inventiveness and imagination. We recognise that art gives the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for our pupils to express themselves and the world as they see it.

Intent

We aim to give our pupils the opportunities to:

  • produce a portfolio of creative work,
  • explore their own ideas and record their experiences,
  • become proficient in a number of art and design skills,
  • evaluate and analyse creatives works using relevant and specific vocabulary and,
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Our current Art & Design scheme allows children to meet all of the Key Stage 2 objectives from the 2014 curriculum, at a level which is accessible to their needs and development. We intend to:

  • create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas,
  • improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing with a range of materials,
  • improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including painting with a range of materials,
  • improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including sculpture with a range of materials,
  • learn about great artists in history,
  • learn about great designers in history.

The current scheme also offers further enrichment opportunities to extend their work so that it becomes cross-curricular and relevant in all areas of the curriculum.

Implementation

There are a number of key concepts that the children cover during their time in Key Stage 2, in order to allow them to develop as artists. These are:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printing
  • 3D form
  • Textiles/collage

The current curriculum was designed to allow all of our pupils to deepen their understanding in these areas, and to expand their awareness of community, culture and respect through both local & global, and historical & modern art (and their influences), in the real world. Art & Design is practised weekly (one topic per term), and some of these include:

  • Indian Art
  • Plant Art
  • Famous Buildings
  • Early Islamic Art
  • Frida Kahlo
  • Viking Art
  • Art of Africa
  • Famous Fashions

Impact

The impact of our Art & Design curriculum is reflected in the creativity, confidence, and enthusiasm of our pupils:

  • Creative Confidence: Pupils show growing skill and imagination in their artwork, and many go beyond expectations for their age in their creative thinking and expression.
  • Cultural Awareness: Children develop curiosity about the world through art, learning about different styles, artists, and cultures, and showing empathy and interest in diversity.
  • Well-being and Personal Growth: Art gives children a powerful outlet for expression. It supports their emotional development, builds resilience, and boosts their self-esteem.
  • Positive Relationships and Community Spirit: Collaborative art projects help children to work together, celebrate each other’s ideas, and contribute to a shared sense of belonging.
  • Wider Curriculum Success: Skills developed in Art—such as observation, problem-solving, and perseverance—support learning across all subjects, contributing to well-rounded academic and personal development.

In summary, Art & Design at Booker Avenue Junior School offers every child the chance to explore, create, and thrive. By nurturing imagination and expression from throughout Key Stage 2, we help children become confident, thoughtful learners who appreciate the beauty and value of art in their lives and in the world around them.
